Fall is in the air, and knitting season is officially here. It's a lovely weekend for the Yarn Crawl, and I'm heading to Black Sheep Knitting Co. first thing this morning.

The greater Boston area has plenty of fiber activity this weekend. In addition to the Yarn Crawl, on Saturday the Harvest & Fiber Festival is happening at Tangerini's Spring Street Farm. I'll be there with a fun group of vendors - click on the link. This is an outdoor event, and the weather forecast is favorable. It's time to start your fall knitting projects.
One corner of our backyard has become overgrown - proof that even in a drought the weeds grow. I decided to let that corner go, and since so many things didn't grow well this summer, I've come to appreciate the weedy tangle. This week's color inspiration . . .
Purply black.
Over the weekend I spent a couple days hanging out at stops along the Greater Boston Yarn Crawl. The atmosphere was relaxed with plenty of time for chatting and knitting.
Yarn shops have different looks and personalities. Here's a glimpse of the two shops I visited.
The Black Sheep Knitting Co.
Mentolat. It's very striking and has been all the rage at the shop.

In addition to yarn, this shop also features fabric - bolts and bolts of gorgeous color with plenty of sewing ideas.
When I was there, a pillow making class was in session.
And if you don't want to take a class, it's also a great place to hang out.
I love show and tell when I'm on the road, and Chris brought in a beautiful Zephyr Cove.
She used Paula, Dirty Snow and Moon Shadow. I've been contemplating this exact color combination, and now I'm even more tempted.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by. The crawl was a great reminder to get out and support your local shop, and it was encouraging to see so many people make an effort. Your yarn shop is a great resource. Don't forget to buy local.
I lost this past Monday to travel, so the week is moving along at breakneck speed. For today I don't have pictures of knitting or colors, but I do have a couple updates to share.
It must be the time of year, but several days ago I was thinking about charity knitting and how I don't have as much time for it as I used to. One thing led to another and before long I was feeling more than a little guilty about the charity knitting I'm not doing. My time is tight these days and my knitting time even more so. I was contemplating a mindless project to be left in the car . . . one that I could work on while waiting at endless red lights.
Before I got that car project situated, I heard about a unique campaign being run by Caribou Coffee to generate scarves for cancer patients. Every time #CaribouKnits is used on Facebook or Twitter, an employee at Caribou Coffee will use a knitting machine to knit an inch. Forty tweets of the #CaribouKnits hashtag will generate a complete scarf.
I'll still try to do my own knitting for charity, but it's nice to know I can contribute to charity knitting in other ways, too.
On another note . . . if you're in the Boston area, this coming weekend is the Greater Boston Yarn Crawl. I know. This time of year the calendar is full of fiber events in the Northeast.
Starting on Friday, fifteen shops in the Boston area will feature trunk shows, demonstrations, giveaways - all manner of fiber fun. Don't forget about the yarn shops in the midst of this fiber festival season. Spread your fiber dollars around and buy local.
